Advocate Shwetasree Majumdar Withdraws Consent for Delhi HC Judgeship
Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Advocate Shwetasree Majumdar for judgeship on 21 August 2024;
Nearly a year after the Supreme Court recommended Advocate Shwetasree Majumdar for elevation as a judge of the Delhi High Court, she has now withdrawn her consent after the Union government kept her appointment pending.
In a resolution published on 21 August 2024, three names were announced by the Top Court's Collegium, consisting of the then Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna and B.R. Gavai.
The collegium had recommended Advocate Shwetasree Majumdar's name for elevation as a judge of the Delhi High Court. Alongside her, the recommendation also included the names of Advocates Ajay Digpaul and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar.
Notably, the other two advocates named in the recommendation were cleared by the Centre on January 6, 2025. However, Advocate Majumdar’s name remained pending for nearly a year, with no specific reason assigned.
Ms Majumdar completed her law from the National Law School of India University, Bangalore. She is well-known in the field of intellectual property law, with 17 years of experience as a private practitioner. She is also a panellist with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).
In addition, Majumdar is the Managing Partner of Fidus Law Chambers, a law firm she founded in 2008. She has appeared in more than 500 matters before various High Courts and the Supreme Court of India.
She has also been appointed amicus curiae by several benches of the Delhi High Court. She served on the six-member committee responsible for drafting the Delhi High Court (Original Side) Rules, 2018.
