Hijab Uniform Row: Kerala High Court Orders Police Protection for Kochi School

Justice N. Nagaresh passed the interim order on October 13, 2025, while hearing a writ petition filed by the school, represented by its manager, Sister Mini K.A., seeking immediate police protection to maintain law and order on the premises and to ensure the smooth conduct of upcoming examinations scheduled from October 15.

The school moved the court claiming that a dispute had arisen when a student, identified as the daughter of the fourth respondent, P.M. Anas, refused to adhere to the institution’s uniform rules and demanded the right to wear a hijab. According to the petition, the issue escalated when the parent allegedly organized protests outside the school gates and threatened to disrupt its functioning.

Represented by advocates Bimala Baby, Magi Pavithran, Roshan Shaji, Remya Thomas, and Jasmine Ligy, the petitioner argued that the unrest had created an atmosphere of fear among students and teachers. The plea sought immediate police protection for the school staff and students, citing concerns over the safety of the institution’s property and the conduct of exams.

Taking note of the situation, the High Court directed the Station House Officer, Palluruthy Police Station, to provide “necessary protection to the school to maintain law and order in its functioning".

Court also issued notice to the parent involved and admitted the writ petition for further hearing on November 13, 2025.

The government pleader, appearing for the State, accepted notice on behalf of the Director General of Police, the Commissioner of Police, and the Station House Officer.
