Jana Nayagan Producer Moves to Withdraw Plea Against CBFC Certification Process Before Madras High Court
KVN Productions LLP has informed the Madras High Court that it no longer wishes to pursue its writ petition challenging the CBFC’s decision to refer the Vijay-starrer Jana Nayagan to a revising committee
KVN Productions files letter before Madras High Court requesting to withdraw Jana Nayagan certification petition
The producer of Vijay-starrer Tamil film Jana Nayagan has filed a letter to withdraw the writ petition pending in the Madras High Court that challenged the Central Board of Film Certification’s (CBFC) handling of the film’s certification process. The matter is expected to be listed for a formal hearing before the bench of Justice P.T. Asha on February 10, “for withdrawal”.
KVN Productions LLP, the producer of Jana Nayagan, filed the original petition in early January after the CBFC referred the film to a revising committee instead of granting the U/A 16+ certificate the makers sought.
In its letter to the court registry, the production house said it now intends to pursue certification through the board’s revising panel and no longer wishes to continue the judicial contest.
The legal dispute stems from a prolonged delay in certification. After submitting the film to the CBFC in December 2025 and agreeing to suggested cuts, the producers alleged that final clearance was being withheld without due procedure, prompting them to knock on the high court’s doors.
A single-judge bench initially ordered immediate certification, but that direction was stayed on appeal and later set aside by a division bench, which remanded the matter for fresh consideration and allowed the producers to amend their petition.
Amid expectations that the film’s producer, KVN Productions, may approach the Supreme Court challenging the Madras High Court division bench order, CBFC filed a caveat. However, on January 15, court directed that KVN Productions' plea be heard by a division bench of the High Court.
The Jana Nayagan controversy has already had a significant industry impact. The film, starring actor Vijay and directed by H. Vinoth, was originally earmarked for a January release, but certification issues have prevented its theatrical debut and reportedly caused substantial financial strain on distributors and exhibitors.
With the writ petition poised for formal withdrawal, the focus will shift back to the revising committee’s review and the board’s internal certification process.
