Madhya Pradesh High Court seeks status report in decades-old Digvijaya Singh-Uma Bharti defamation case, flagging prolonged delays in trial proceedings.
Adjournments Under Scrutiny as Madhya Pradesh High Court Seeks Status Report in Digvijaya Singh-Uma Bharti Defamation Case
A fresh push by the Madhya Pradesh High Court to revive a decades-old political defamation dispute between two former Madhya Pradesh Chief Ministers, Digvijaya Singh and Uma Bharti has brought renewed focus on delays in trial proceedings, with the Court now seeking a status report from the trial court to assess the exact stage of the case.
The case, rooted in allegations made during the 2003 Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections, has lingered across forums for over two decades. At its core are statements allegedly made by Bharti accusing Singh of corruption and financial irregularities, which prompted Singh to initiate criminal defamation proceedings. Over the years, the matter has travelled from the trial court to appellate forums, eventually reaching the High Court, but without any decisive conclusion on merits.
Hearing the matter, the High Court expressed concern over the prolonged pendency and lack of substantive progress. Taking note of the procedural stagnation, Justice Pramod Kumar Agrawal directed that a detailed status report be called from the concerned trial court. The order signals a judicial intent to re-examine whether the matter has been allowed to drift without adequate adjudication.
The Bench noted that despite the passage of several years, even the stage of final arguments has not been reached. As per records placed before the Court, the proceedings have repeatedly been adjourned, often at the request of parties. Observing the pattern of delay, the Court remarked that the present status of the trial must be clearly ascertained before further orders are passed.
The dispute has remained pending in the High Court since 2017, during which time effective hearings have not progressed substantially. Reports indicate that adjournments sought by counsel on both sides have contributed significantly to the delay, resulting in a situation where the matter has effectively remained in limbo.
In this backdrop, the Court’s direction to call for a status report appears aimed at injecting urgency into the proceedings. The report is expected to clarify what evidence has been recorded, whether witnesses have been examined, and what procedural steps remain pending before the trial court.
The matter is now listed for further hearing on April 27, 2026, when the status report is expected to be placed before the Court. The outcome of that hearing may determine whether the High Court intervenes more directly to ensure time-bound disposal.
