The Patna High Court directs Congress to remove AI-video of PM Narendra Modi and his late mother from all social media platforms

The Patna High Court has directed the Congress party to remove from its social media platforms an artificial intelligence (AI) generated video circulated by its Bihar unit, which depicted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother, Heeraben.

The order came after a petition objected to the content of the video and its circulation online. The plea raised concerns about the use of AI to create political messaging that involved the Prime Minister’s mother, questioning its propriety and potential misuse during the politically sensitive climate.

Court took note of the objection and ordered the immediate removal of the video from all official social media handles of the Congress.

The bench further ordered that notices be served to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee chief, and the social media platforms named as respondents in the PIL, directing them to submit their responses in the case

The AI-generated video, shared by the Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee, reportedly used artificial intelligence technology to show Prime Minister Modi in a fabricated interaction involving his mother. The clip sparked sharp criticism from political opponents, with arguments that the party had crossed an ethical line by dragging a family member of the Prime Minister into political discourse through manipulated visuals.

The matter was taken up by the high court following the filing of a plea by a practicing advocate at the High Court that sought judicial intervention. The petitioner argued that the video not only violated decency but also risked misleading the public by presenting synthetic content as if it were genuine. On being apprised of these concerns, the bench directed that the video be pulled down without delay.
