A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed by one Subham Kumar Singh before the Bombay High Court regarding the extreme shortage of rabies vaccine in the State. Singh is a law graduate working in a Technology firm in Mumbai.

Plea seeks direction to the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) running government and municipal hospitals in Mumbai (including PHCs) to render and procure critical vaccines related to the prevention of Rabies. “There is a severe shortage of anti-rabies vaccination in Mumbai” stated the petitioner in his plea.

The plea states that on April 10, 2022, the petitioner approached MCGM hospital for the rabies vaccine and was informed to visit JJ hospital, Byculla within 24 hours. Then on April 11, 2022, when the petitioner approached JJ Hospital he was denied the vaccine due to shortage.

Later, the petitioner again approached the JJ Hospital, but he was informed to pay and buy the vaccine from a private pharmacy within the campus. He then procured the vaccine from a private hospital but was informed by the doctors that after 72 hours it was futile.

The petitioner has also requested the court to issue directions to the state to control the menace of violent street dogs in the State.
