Police Inspector Making Reels to Build Fan Following 'Very Serious Misconduct': Rajasthan HC Orders DGP Probe

The Rajasthan High Court on July 17 directed the Director General of Police (DGP), Rajasthan, to conduct an inquiry into the conduct of a Traffic Circle Inspector who allegedly prepared and uploaded social media reels with the assistance of his son to build a fan following, observing that such conduct amounts to "very serious misconduct."

Justice Ashok Kumar Jain passed the direction while deciding a bail application filed by an accused arrested in connection with an FIR registered over an incident in which an Audi car allegedly being driven recklessly on a public road injured the complainant's son.

During the hearing, counsel for the accused submitted that the complainant, who was serving as Circle Inspector (Traffic), and his son were in the habit of preparing reels and uploading them on social media to impress and attract followers.

It was argued that on the date of the incident, while the complainant had stopped the car and was making a reel, his son suddenly jumped in front of the vehicle as part of the "drama story" of the reel, resulting in the accident.

It was further contended that both the complainant and his son were active on social media and that there was an unexplained delay in registration of the FIR despite the complainant being a police officer.

The Public Prosecutor had opposed the bail plea.

After considering the record, the Court noted that the investigation had been completed, the applicant was no longer required for investigation, had remained in custody for a considerable period, and had no criminal antecedents.

It also observed that the injuries were the result of the vehicle's act, that the accused and the injured were previously unknown to each other, and that there was no mens rea behind the incident.

Holding that the trial would take time, the Court granted bail to the accused without expressing any opinion on the merits of the case.

However, before parting with the matter, the Court took note of what it described as "some unusual facts" warranting further scrutiny.

The Court observed: "A Police Inspector indulged in preparing reels and further uploading them on social media, whether Instagram, Facebook or any other social media platform, with the assistance of his son, thereby creating a fan following, which itself is a very serious misconduct."

Taking serious note of the conduct, the Court directed the DGP, Rajasthan, to conduct an inquiry and submit a report before the High Court within two months from the date of receipt of a copy of the order.
