The Madras High Court recently directed Police to conduct an investigation into a case wherein a person submitted a fake death certificate of his grandmother.

A bench of Justice S Vaidhyanathan and Justice AD Jagdish Chandira directed the probe to be headed by the Additional Superintendent of Police. The court also asked the department to arrest the people accused in the incident.

The bench was hearing a petition filed by a woman's grandson Selladurai, who alleged that another grandson Rajkumar has kidnapped her in view of getting her properties illegally.

Subsequently, the bench disposed of the petition as the woman had died. However, the bench noted that Rajkumar allegedly produced a fake certificate of death. Taking this into account, the bench has directed the probe.

The Selladurai claimed that Rajkumar had adbucted Sembayee in order to take her properties. The police investigated his allegation and discovered that the old woman had been into a Tiruchi orphanage. She allegedly passed away and was burried in the orphanage cemetery, according to the orphanage.

However, Rajkumar produced a fake death certificate that had been procured while the grandmother was still alive after the police called him in for questioning. It appears that Sembayee had died not once, but twice, the judges noted after reviewing the documentation submitted to the court. A person may have two birth certificates in this state, but not two death certificates.
