YouTuber Ajeet Bharti Moves Punjab & Haryana HC, Seeks Details of FIR Over Remarks on CJI
Bharti claimed he learned about FIR over his comments on CJI Gavai through media reports
The Punjab & Haryana High Court gives state time to clarify whether any FIR has been registered against Ajeet Bharti
YouTuber and commentator Ajeet Bharti has approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court, seeking information from the Punjab government on whether any First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against him for his alleged remarks against Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai after a lawyer attempted to throw a shoe at the CJI in the Supreme Court on October 6, 2025.
The petition, filed through advocates Ashish Dixit and Shivam Tiwari, came up before the bench of Justice Subhas Mehla on Monday, October 27.
According to the order, Bharti’s counsel told the court that he had learned about a possible FIR through a national newspaper report and wanted official confirmation from the state authorities. His plea was limited to asking the Punjab government to inform him if any FIR had indeed been filed.
State counsel Jastej Singh, Additional Advocate General for Punjab, sought time to verify the information. He submitted that since the petition did not mention any specific police station or district, it would amount to a “roving enquiry” to check every district in Punjab for a possible FIR.
The court granted the state time and adjourned the matter to November 3, 2025.
The development follows recent reports that the Punjab Police booked Bharti under provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for allegedly making casteist and inflammatory comments against CJI Gavai.
The controversy erupted after Bharti’s comments on Justice Gavai were circulated online, drawing criticism for targeting a sitting Supreme Court judge.
While the Punjab Police have not yet issued a public statement on the investigation’s progress, Bharti’s petition marks his first formal legal response to the reports of criminal action against him.
The matter will next be heard on November 3, when the State is expected to clarify whether any FIR has been officially registered in Punjab against Bharti.
On October 6 morning, an unexpected incident unfolded inside the Supreme Court of India, when an advocate attempted to throw a shoe at CJI Gavai, while court proceedings were underway. The courtroom disturbance took place around 11:35 a.m. in Court No. 1, during the mentioning of cases before the Chief Justice's Bench.
After the incident, Bharti put up a video on his X and other social platforms, commenting on the incident. He wrote: “Gavai is a lousy, undeserving judge, and he should face a contempt (of court) case".
Notably, on October 7, Noida Police took Bharti in for questioning following purportedly “incendiary” remarks he made. However, he was later released during the day.
On October 27, the Supreme Court declined to initiate criminal contempt proceedings against Advocate Rakesh Kishore, who attempted to hurl the shoe at the CJI.
