[HOLD] Acting Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court to be transferred to Allahabad High Court, New CJ appointments expected in 7 other High Courts
The Acting Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court Justice Rajesh Bindal is to be appointed as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, Indian Express reported. Justice Bindal was appointed as the acting Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court on April 29 just as West Bengal finished polling.
The decision was made by Supreme Court collegium consisting of CJI N.V Ramana, Justices UU Lalit and AM Khanwilkar.
Reports further suggest that Justice Arindam Sinha, a senior judge of the Calcutta High Court, had written a letter to all judges of the high court, including Justice Bindal, raising questions over the acting Chief Justice’s intervention in the Narada sting case.
The Collegium has further decided to transfer 5 other judges from various high courts of the country, including Justice Arup Kumar Goswami from Andhra Pradesh HC to Chhattisgarh HC, Justice Mohd. Rafiq from Madhya Pradesh HC to Himachal Pradesh HC, Justice Akil Qureshi from Tripura HC to Rajasthan HC, Justice Indrajit Mahanty from Rajasthan HC to Tripura HC & Justice Biswanath Somadder from Meghalaya HC to Sikkim HC.
It is pertinent to mention that 7 High Courts are set to get new Chief Justices apart from the aforementioned reshuffling whereby the Calcutta High Court will have Justice Prakash Srivastava as the CJ, Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra will be Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court, Justice RR Awasthi will be CJ of Karnataka High Court, Justice S C Sharma of Telangana High Court, Justice Ranjit V More will be CJ of Meghalaya HC, Justice Aravind Kumar of Gujarat HC & Justice RV Malimath will be CJ of Madhya Pradesh High Court.
