NSE Shares Make BSE Debut At ₹1,800, Close 1.85% Above IPO Price
After a 5.71-times-subscribed IPO, NSE shares listed on the BSE at ₹1,800 and closed at ₹1,818 on their first day of trading.
NSE shares listed at ₹1,800 on BSE and closed at ₹1,818 after a ₹22,561.57-crore IPO that was subscribed 5.71 times.
The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE), one of India's largest financial market institutions, made its much-awaited stock market debut on Thursday, with its shares listing at ₹1,800 apiece on the BSE, a 0.84% premium over the issue price of ₹1,785.
The shares, however, gained further during the trading session and closed at around ₹1,818, up 1.85% from the IPO price. The stock moved higher by about 5% during the day before giving up some of those gains.
The listing marks the culmination of NSE's long-pending effort to become a publicly traded company. The exchange's ₹22,561.57-crore initial public offering was India's second-largest public issue, after Hyundai Motor India's ₹27,870-crore IPO in 2024.
What was the response to the IPO?
The NSE IPO, which opened for subscription on September 17 and closed on September 21, received strong demand from investors. The issue was subscribed 5.71 times, with bids received for 50.58 crore shares against 8.86 crore shares on offer.
The strongest demand came from qualified institutional buyers (QIBs), whose portion was subscribed 12.68 times. The non-institutional investor category was subscribed 6.55 times, while the retail portion was subscribed 1.39 times.
The IPO had a price band of ₹1,700 to ₹1,785 per share, with a lot size of eight shares. At the upper end of the price band, a retail investor had to invest ₹14,280 for one lot.
The issue was entirely an offer for sale (OFS), comprising 12.64 crore shares being sold by existing shareholders. This means NSE itself did not receive fresh capital from the IPO.
Why is the listing significant?
NSE's public listing gives investors direct access to the ownership of the exchange that operates one of India's principal equity and derivatives markets.
The listing also creates a notable situation in India's capital markets: NSE's shares are listed on the BSE, its principal listed exchange rival, rather than on NSE itself.
The exchange's public-market debut had been closely watched after a prolonged period in which NSE remained an unlisted company. Reuters had reported before the listing that only 5.48% of NSE's pre-offer capital would be freely tradeable at launch, potentially affecting the availability of shares in the market.
What happened after listing?
Despite the strong subscription to the IPO, the initial market debut was relatively measured. Shares opened at ₹1,800 and ended the day at ₹1,818.
At the closing price, NSE's market valuation was around ₹4.5 lakh crore, placing it among India's largest listed companies.
