A meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs was convened on Wednesday to deliberate on the rising threat of cybercrime in India. Chaired by BJP MP Radha Mohan Das Agrawal, the session focused on the theme, “Cyber Crime – Ramifications, Protection and Prevention.”

According to sources, members of the committee emphasized the urgent need to enhance public awareness about cyber safety in light of increasing internet usage and digital financial transactions. The discussion also touched upon the growing incidence of online fraud and the concerningly low conviction rates in cybercrime cases.

The committee heard submissions from representatives of the Department of Financial Services (DFS), the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and officials from public and private sector banks. These stakeholders shared their perspectives on institutional and policy-level interventions necessary to curb cyber offenses.

The committee is scheduled to reconvene on Thursday to take inputs from other key agencies, including the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), the Financial Intelligence Unit-India (FIU-IND), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
