The Supreme Court Bar Association has released a presser  today stating that it is going to hold a candle march at Rajpath, starting at India Gate at a date and time to be decided by its President Vikas Singh, Senior Advocate. The press release states that this decision was arrived at unanimously at an Executive Committee meeting held on 7th of January.

The presser further states that the candle march will be held when a large number of lawyers can gather as per the DDMA guidelines. It is further stated that the march is being held on account of SCBA's various grievances not being addressed by the court. The grievances are

1) The lawyers being muted and unmuted by the court staff and the same militates against the concept of open court hearing as guaranteed under Article 145 of the Constitution

2) Matters not being listed strictly per date of hearing (non-discriminatory basis)

3) Delay in finalisation of list for allotment of chambers inspite of the same being ready for the last 3 years

4) Non-consideration of SCBA members for elevation to various High Courts

5) No steps being taken for construction of new lawyers chambers

6) Not giving access to Supreme Court lawyers to auditorium and additional place in the premises.

It is to be noted that the SCBA president Vikas Singh had addressed letter to CJI NV Ramana on 6th January regarding non-consideration of several pending issues of the bar.He had said that the inaction of bench in not meeting SCBA’s demands gives an impression that their voice is not being heard because they don’t go on a strike. The letter begins with the words, “I am writing this letter with deep sense of anguish.”
