Court has deferred hearing in the matter in order to enable an amicable solution between the parties who raised questions about the maintenance of the Kamakhya temple and against the temple authorities.
While hearing a matter relating to the maintenance of the Kamakhya Devi Temple in Assam, the Supreme Court today remarked that the temple is not being maintained properly.
Justice Ajay Rastogi made this observation whilst adding that there can be no compromise on the hygiene standards in a temple.
In the case before the court, certain people wrote letters saying that hygiene was not being taken care of on the temple premises.
In response to these allegations, Senior Advocate Rajeev Dhawan, appearing for the temple authorities, told the bench, also comprising Justice CT Ravikumar, that the temple is being taken care of by roping in expert bodies like the Indian Institute of Technology.
To enable a possible amicable solution between the parties, Court deferred the hearing in the matter till January 2023.
Last year, the Supreme Court refused to interfere in a case alleging misappropriation of funds by the Kamakhya Debutter Board saying that it was not a fit case for interference.
A contempt plea was filed by the elected Dolois (head priest) representing members of Bordeuri Samaj of Kamakhya Devalaya wherein they had invoked the jurisdiction of the top court under Article 129 of the Constitution read with the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971 for initiating action against the authorities whereby the Kamakhya Debutter Board was directed to vacate the premises and other properties of the temple to the head priest of the temple.
