Supreme Court Collegium recommends 3 High Court judges for elevation

Supreme Court which has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges is presently working with 31 judges;

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the names of three Chief Justices / Judge of the High Courts, for elevation as Judges in the Supreme Court.

They are:

  1. Justice NV Anjaria (Chief Justice, Karnataka High Court)
  2. Justice Vijay Bishnoi (Chief Justice, Gauhati High Court)
  3. Justice AS Chandurkar (Judge, Bombay High Court)


Justice Anjaria was elevated as Additional Judge, High Court of Gujarat on 21st November 2011 and confirmed as permanent Judge on September 6, 2013. He took oath as the Chief Justice of High Court of Karnataka on in February 2024.

In 2013, Justice Bishnoi was appointed as Additional Judge of the Rajasthan High Court and took oath as a Permanent Judge of the Rajasthan High Court on 7th January 2015. He was later appointed as the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court and took oath on 5th February, 2024.

Justice Chandurkar was elevated as Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on 21st June 2013.

The five-member collegium headed by Chief Justice B R Gavai has recommended these names as against the three existing vacancies of judges following the superannuation of ex-CJI Sanjiv Khanna, Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Hrishikesh Roy.
