Supreme Court regains full strength as three new judges sworn in
CJI BR Gavai administered the oath to the three judges whose names were cleared yesterday for elevation.;
The Supreme Court today held the swearing in ceremony for its three newly appointed judges, Justice Nilay Vipinchandra Anjaria, Justice Vijay Bishnoi and Justice Atul Sharachchandra Chandurkar.
Yesterday, in exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President today, after consultation with Chief Justice of India, had appointed Justices Anjaria, Bishnoi and Chandurkar as Judges of the Supreme Court of India.
Supreme Court Collegium had recommended their names for elevation three days back.
Justice Anjaria was elevated as Additional Judge, High Court of Gujarat on 21st November 2011 and confirmed as permanent Judge on September 6, 2013. He took oath as the Chief Justice of High Court of Karnataka on in February 2024.
In 2013, Justice Bishnoi was appointed as Additional Judge of the Rajasthan High Court and took oath as a Permanent Judge of the Rajasthan High Court on 7th January 2015. He was later appointed as the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court and took oath on 5th February, 2024.
Justice Chandurkar was elevated as Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on 21st June 2013.
The five-member collegium headed by Chief Justice B R Gavai has recommended these names as against the three existing vacancies of judges following the superannuation of ex-CJI Sanjiv Khanna, Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Hrishikesh Roy.
With these three appointments coming through, the Supreme Court which is presently working with 31 judges, will resume functioning with its sanctioned strength of 34 judges.
