Supreme Court To Hear Fresh Dispute In ₹30,000-Crore Kapur Family Battle Over Board Changes

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a fresh application in the ₹30,000-crore Kapur family dispute after allegations surfaced that key corporate decisions were being taken despite the matter having been referred to mediation by the apex court.
While hearing the mentioning, Justice JB Pardiwala orally remarked, “We have entered into an arena where Mahabharat will look very small. We will look into it.”
The Special Leave Petition filed on behalf of Rani Kapur was mentioned before a bench also comprising of Justice KV Viswanathan.
Senior Advocates Navin Pahwa and Vaibhav Gaggar, along with AoR Smriti Churiwal, appeared for Rani Kapur.
Senior Advocate Pahwa informed the bench that on May 7, 2026, the Supreme Court had referred the parties to mediation in an attempt to resolve the ongoing dispute concerning the Kapur family’s business interests and estate.
However, it was submitted that immediately after the mediation order, Raghuvanshi Investment Private Limited (RIPL) issued a notice dated May 8 convening a board meeting on May 18, 2026.
According to the submissions made before the Court, the agenda for the proposed board meeting includes appointment of two new independent directors and changes to the authorised bank signatories of the company.
Counsel appearing for Rani Kapur argued that such actions during the pendency of mediation proceedings were unfair and contrary to the spirit of the Supreme Court’s earlier order.
Senior Advocate Gopal Jain, appearing for RIPL, opposed the allegations and submitted that the company is a Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC), and the proposed appointments were necessary for compliance with Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines.
After hearing both sides briefly, the bench agreed to examine the issue and listed the application for hearing and consideration on May 14.
The Court had appointed former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud as the mediator to facilitate discussions between the parties. It had earlier suggested mediation considering the advanced age of petitioner Rani Kapur and expressed hope that the dispute could be resolved amicably within the family.
During the hearing, the Bench made it clear that the mediation exercise would remain confined to the family members involved in the dispute. “We make it clear that this mediation is confined only so far as the family members are concerned,” the Court observed.
In a detailed SLP, the petitioner has assailed three Delhi High Court orders dated 29.01.2026, 10.02.2026, and 23.03.2026 passed in C.S. (OS) No. 69 of 2026, arguing that the court “merely issued notice” and repeatedly deferred urgent pleas seeking protection of her assets. The petitioner contends that despite being an elderly widow, the High Court failed to pass interim protection orders, leaving the estate vulnerable. She alleges that this delay has allowed the opposite side to “prejudice and dissipate” the family assets.
At the heart of the dispute is a contested trust, the “RK Family Trust / Rani Kapur Family Trust”, which the petitioner claims was fraudulently created in 2017. She asserts that assets originally belonging to her late husband were transferred into the trust without her informed consent. Invoking provisions under the Indian Contract Act, 1872 and Indian Trust Act, 1882, the petitioner has argued that the trust arrangement is unconscionable and should be presumed to have been executed under undue influence.
In a related new, recently the Court had sought the response of actor Karisma Kapoor on an application filed by Priya Kapur seeking certified copies of court records relating to divorce proceedings between Kapoor and her former husband, late industrialist Sunjay Kapur.
