Supreme Court To Launch Monthly Lecture Series On Law, Justice & Legal Education; Proposes Nyaya Shiksha Samman

The initiative was announced by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on the occasion of Teachers’ Day on September 5. It is aimed at creating a regular platform for dialogue and exchange of ideas on contemporary issues concerning law, justice and society.

Built around the theme “One important idea. Every month,” the lecture series will bring together members of the Bench and Bar, academia, eminent experts and young legal minds to deliberate on issues relevant to the legal system and society.

The CJI will guide the themes, speakers and overall format of the series, with each edition focusing on a contemporary and significant subject.

Distinguished lecture to be followed by ideas dialogue

Each monthly edition will feature a Distinguished Lecture by an eminent jurist, scholar, legal educationist or domain expert.

The lecture will be followed by an Ideas Dialogue, a moderated discussion that will include an opportunity for selected questions and participation from young advocates, law students and researchers.

According to the Supreme Court, the initiative is intended to move beyond a conventional lecture format by encouraging informed discussion across generations and greater engagement between established legal institutions and young members of the legal community.

Supreme Court to create permanent knowledge archive

The initiative will also seek to create a lasting public knowledge resource.

Each edition is proposed to be professionally recorded and accompanied by an edited transcript and a concise Ideas Paper, with the aim of gradually building a permanent archive of contemporary legal thought and discussion.

The lectures will also be livestreamed to facilitate wider national access. Concise summaries, including in Indian languages, are proposed to make the discussions accessible to a larger legal and academic audience.

'Supreme Court Nyaya Shiksha Samman' proposed

As part of the initiative, the Supreme Court has also proposed an annual “Supreme Court Nyaya Shiksha Samman”, a non-monetary honour recognising distinguished contributions to legal education.

The honour is proposed to be conferred once every year around Teachers’ Day on one or two outstanding legal educationists. The first presentation of the honour will take place after the inaugural lecture.

The Supreme Court stated that the initiative is intended to encourage deeper legal thought, meaningful dialogue and wider participation in discussions concerning the future of law and justice.

The Court also envisages the lecture series as an enduring institutional tradition that will create a credible body of lectures, discussions and publications of lasting public value.

The first edition of the Supreme Court Monthly Lecture Series will be held in September 2026, with one distinguished edition to follow every month.
