Editor's note: I walked into this conversation knowing there were things we would probably disagree on. We did. What surprised me was how little that mattered.
In a time when public conversations are increasingly defined by binaries, this one resisted easy labels. Senior Advocate Saurabh Kirpal speaks of liberalism not as an ideology to be defended, but as a constitutional ethic rooted in individual liberty, equality and restraint in the exercise of power. His views on privilege, personal law reform and constitutional morality are marked by a rare willingness to hold two ideas together, the urgency of reform and the importance of carrying people along with it.
There is no appetite here for sweeping declarations or ideological grandstanding. Reform, in his view, is meaningful only when it is principled, inclusive and capable of enduring. It is a perspective that leaves room for disagreement, but very little room for intellectual laziness.
He explained his views with clarity, listened to mine with equal respect, and created the kind of space where questions could be asked without fear of offending.
That, to me, is the mark of a thoughtful lawyer. A rarity now, he never mistook disagreement for hostility. By the end of the conversation, what stayed with me wasn't simply his liberal outlook. It was his willingness to engage with opposing viewpoints without trying to overpower them.
