Justice B Veerappa, a senior judge of the Karnataka High Court recently said, “I am ready to stand in front of the Vidhana Soudha and the high court and behead myself if I make a mistake, that is the spirit with which I work as a judge.”
According to India Today, he made the statement after reports of advocates allegedly casting aspersions on high court judges and levelling them with ‘baseless’ allegations during court proceedings.
Justice Veerappa, was delivering a speech at the farewell organised by the Advocates Association Bengaluru (AAB) for Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi. Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi retired on Friday. Justice Alok Aradhe has been appointed the acting Chief Justice.
The judge further said, "The judges sit in glass houses and it is for advocates association to come to their rescue when unscrupulous members of the Bar make wild allegations against judges. He remarked, “Judges have no option but to use Sudarshana Chakra after certain limits.”
Reacting to the judge’s statement, the President of AAB, Subash Reddy said that there is no bigger issue for a judge than his integrity being questioned, especially in an environment where keeping integrity itself has become difficult.
Subba Reddy further informed that the judge was speaking regarding certain statements made by an advocate. Reddy said that such erratic statements can affect people’s faith in the institution.
