Overcharging Covid Patients by Private Hospitals: Delhi High Court Directs Committee to Expeditiously Decide Plea by 63-year-old Charged Rs.17 lakhs by Hospital

The Delhi High Court today granted relief to a 63- year-old man who moved Court against exhorbitant medical expenses charged by a private hospital for treatment of Covid-19.

The single judge bench of Justice Rekha Palli hearing the matter directed the committee constituted by the Delhi Government for dealing with complaints of overcharging by private hospitals, to expeditiously decide the petitioner's case.

The said committee was constituted by the Delhi Government in June last year.

The petitioner submitted that the prescribed maximum per day package rates for Covid-19 related treatments in private hospitals in the National Capital Territory of Delhi is upto Rs.18,000/- per day provided that the patient was admitted in the ICU with the need of ventilator.

The petitioner complained that for 36 days he was had been charged Rs Rs.17,89,329 by a private hospital.

The order was passed pursuant to Adv. Satyakam’s submission that in every district a committee has already been set up by the Delhi Government for dealing with complaints relating to overcharging of medical expenses by private hospitals basis which it was suggested that the matter may be referred to the said committee.

On the Court’s query whether the petitioner had objections to Delhi Government’s suggestion, the petitioner said that he had no objections.

The Court has also granted liberty to the petitioner to approach the Court if not satisfied with the Committee's decision.
