Synopsis

It has been alleged that human waste is being mixed with the water in the overhead tank near the area where the Arunthathiyar community lives in Padukkotai.

In a plea against caste discrimination in Vengaivayal hamlet in Tamil Nadu's Pudukkottai, the Madras High Court has sought a status report from the Pudukkottai collector, SP, and DSP Human Rights and Social Justice wing.

In the plea before the Madurai bench, more than 30 people who drank water contaminated with human waste in the Pudukottai area demanded compensation.

It has been alleged that the human waste had been mixed in the overhead tank near the area where the Arunthathiyar community lives in the village.

The bench had been informed that the lower caste people could not access the shrine because of the two-tumbler system followed by the village.

The public prosecutor informed the court that a total of three cases have been filed over the mixing of human excrement and overhead storage tanks, the plea added.

The two-tumbler system means that the higher caste people will drink water from one tumbler and the other caste people will drink water from another tumbler.

In view of the above, the court has sought a status report from the Pudukottai District Collector and DSP to submit their status report over the issue.
