The bench commented on how the authorities need to consider about 100 years ahead and that cannot be only skyscrapers in the city without open spaces
The Bombay High Court on Friday said that the vision should be to make Mumbai a slum free city.
"Vision is to have Mumbai, which is considered an international city and the financial capital of our country, slum-free. We need to have an absolutely slum-free city. This Act will help that vision," the court said.
The division bench of the high court comprising Justice GS Kulkarni and Justice Somasekhar Sunderesan was hearing a suo moto PIL initiated on directions of the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court in August directed the high court to revisit the implementation of the Maharashtra Slum Area (Improvement, Clearance and Redevelopment) Act.
The bench commented on how the authorities need to consider about 100 years ahead and that cannot be only skyscrapers in the city without open spaces.
While expressing its concern about the slum dwellers the bench said, "We are really concerned about the plight of slum dwellers. Merely because you are a slum dweller doesn't mean that you are left to the discretion of developers. They end up with a pittance. Slum dwellers are victims at the hands of these developers," the bench said.
The bench directed Slum Rehabilitation Authority and other parties to file their affidavits and posted the matter for further hearing on September 20.
