Comparing the judiciary to a “temple” for citizens, the Chief Minister has said it serves as the last frontier for getting justice and upholding constitutional rights
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for no political bias in the judiciary, saying that it must be absolutely pure.
Speaking at the ‘East Zone-II Regional Conference of National Judicial Academy’ held yesterday in Kolkata, the Chief Minister said the judiciary should be honest and free from political bias.
At the outset, before making such remarks, Banerjee tendered an apology saying that it was not her intention to 'humiliate or manhandle' anyone.
She then went on to say, "My kind submission is that, please see that there is no political bias in the judiciary. Judiciary must be pure, absolutely pure, honest and sacred....and let the people do the pooja..".
The event was also attended by Chief Justice of India Dr. DY Chandrachud who observed that judges should refrain from allowing their personal beliefs to influence their rulings.
“Increasingly, we see judges writing on their ideologies. For example, a judge stating that he won’t give protection to a couple who are staying together, as they are in a consensual relationship outside marriage. The law protects relationships in the nature of marriage, yet we find judges writing they cannot give protection,” the CJI added.
Justices BR Gavai, Rajesh Bindal and Dipankar Datta of the Supreme Court were also present at the event.
The East Zone-II Regional Conference on the topic "Contemporary Judicial Developments and Strengthening Justice through Law & Technology" was held on 29th & 30th June in collaboration with the High Court at Calcutta and West Bengal Judicial Academy.
