Summons were issued by the Lok Sabha committee to West Bengal Chief Secretary Bhagwati Prasad Gopalika, Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Kumar, concerned District Magistrate and Assistant Superintendent
In the plea by West Bengal Chief Secretary and other officials challenging the notice issued to them by Lok Sabha Privileges Committee over a complaint by BJP leader and MP Sukanta Majumdar alleging misconduct and life-threatening injuries, the Supreme Court today granted two weeks to the Lok Sabha Secretariat for filing its response.
A CJI DY Chandrachud led bench allowed the request seeking time made by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.
"The privileges committee has never acted so fast..", Senior Advocate AM Singhvi appearing for the West Bengal officials told the bench also comprising Justices Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.
In February, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for the State of West Bengal told the CJI DY Chandrachud led bench that the complaint was based on falsehood.
Allegedly, Majumdar was stopped from entering Sandeshkhali, where women have been agitating over alleged atrocities committed against them by Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh and his aides.
Arguments were made on the last date against the invocation of privilege in such a context.
Notably, counsel for the Lok Sabha secretariat clarified that the privileges committee's proceedings were routine. "This is the first sitting of privileges committee. They are not being accused of anything. This is a regular process...," the bench was told.
