The petitioners have alleged that the pesticides that are banned in other countries are being allowed in India which is a health hazard.
The Supreme Court on Monday ordered the Central Government to provide a report on the measures taken to enforce the ban on dangerous pesticides.
A bench of Chief Justice of India Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice V Ramasubramanian and Justice JB Pardiwala said, "The ASG shall file an updated status report in respect of regulatory measures which have been taken by the Union of India for regulating ban on hazardous pesticides".
The order has been passed in a batch of petitions seeking ban on use of hazardous pesticides. The petitions have also sought direction to grant State Governments the liberty to prohibit usage of hazardous pesticides at their level.
In her petition, Kavita Kuruganti claimed that despite ample proof of the effectiveness of ecological farming techniques like organic farming in terms of both farmer profitability and crop productivity, harmful pesticides are still utilized.
Advocate Prashant Bhushan appearing for Kuruganti submitted that all the pesticides mentioned in the plea are banned in other countries, and are being allowed in India which is a health hazard.
