Synopsis

The accused, currently lodged in Manipur Central Jail had approached the court saying that he is suffering from piles and tuberculosis and was suffering from extreme backache

The Supreme Court today came down heavily on the Manipur state government for not taking a jailed Kuki person to the hospital who was suffering from a serious disease.

A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and Ujjal Bhuyan asked the government if the jailed accused was not tended to because he belonged from the Kuki community.

"We direct him to be examined now. If the medical report reveals something serious, we will take you to task!" the bench further remarked.

The high court's order placed before the top court's vacation bench revealed that the accused was not taken out for medical examination at a hospital as he was from Kuki community and that shifting him to hospital will be hazardous given the law and order situation.

Court has ordered for the accused to be taken to Gauhati Medical College in Assam and get him examined therein. A detailed report is to be placed before top court on July 15 when the matter will be heard next.
