1. [ WBSSC Scam] The Supreme Court on Thursday came down hard on the West Bengal government over its handling of the tainted teachers’ recruitment scam linked to the State Level Selection Test (SLST) conducted by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC). Court pulled up the State for its submissions before the Calcutta High Court regarding tainted candidates. Expressing disbelief, Justice Sanjay Kumar remarked, “You said our judgment does not say anything on tainted candidates being permitted to appear. This is how the State of West Bengal is understanding the judgment? What kind of blue-eyed girls and boys are these that you even bring in the Advocate General to argue for them?”

2. [SHUATS] Supreme Court refused to entertain a petition filed by Sam Higginbottom Charitable Society alleging a systematic effort in the state of Uttar Pradesh to destroy the minority character of the Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology And Sciences, Prayagraj. Writ petition filed under Article 32 sought directions to the state authorities to take cognisance of the representation made by the University regarding the forceful installation of idols in the Dean's office. The plea also alleged celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi in the University premises as opposed to the minority character of the University.

3. [Suo Motu case on medically discharged cadets] The Supreme Court of India has appointed retired Justice and Senior Advocate Rekha Palli as the amicus curiae in the suo motu case concerning cadets who were medically discharged during training at elite academies like the NDA and IMA. The court, also recorded appreciation for the Union governments' quick response for the issues faced by cadets after Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati informed the bench that a status report had been filed which stated that the medically discharged cadets were entitle to the facilities under the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS).

3. [Exploitation of Teachers] In an appeal timed ahead of Teachers’ Day, a citizen namely Rana Pratap Singh has written to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, urging the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognizance of what he described as the “systematic exploitation of teachers” and the collapse of accountability in private educational institutions across India. The letter, addressed as a tribute to Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, laments that while teachers once commanded reverence second only to parents, they are today reduced to “living in despair, silenced and invisible.” The plea frames the issue not just as an employment crisis but as a matter of “national interest” impacting the dignity of educators and the future of India’s youth.

4. [Patent Case] Supreme Court has refused a petition filed by Competition Commission of India against a Delhi High Court order which had put an end to its investigation into Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson and Monsanto Holding Private Limited. "In the peculiar facts and circumstances of the case, more particularly, keeping in mind what has been observed by the High Court in Paragraph 58 of its impugned judgment, referred to above and also taking into consideration the fact that the original complainants/informants have nothing further to say in the matter, we should not interfere with the impugned judgment passed by the High Court", the top court has ordered.

5. [Lodhi Era Gumti] The Supreme Court has pulled up the Municipal Corporate of Delhi for not following its orders regarding a Gumti, belonging to the Lodhi era in Delhi's Defence Colony. "You will clean it in two hours if a dignitary is coming", said a bench of Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and SVN Bhatti referring to non-maintenance of cleanliness around the Lodhi-era "Gumti of Shaikh Ali". Court was hearing a plea filed by Defence Colony resident Rajeev Suri who has sought that the Gumti be declared a protected monument.

6. [Faridkot Inheritance] Three years after the Supreme Court upheld the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s ruling dividing the Rs. 25,000-crore estate of the late Maharaja Harinder Singh Brar between his daughters, the protracted Faridkot royal inheritance battle has once again reached the Apex Court. The Bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta on August 29 stayed further proceedings on execution applications relating to the division of assets, which include forts, palaces, farmland, jewellery, vintage cars, and bank deposits.

7. [Ponzi Scam] The Supreme Court has dismissed a writ petition filed under Article 32 of the Constitution seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into an alleged nationwide Ponzi scheme run by popular YouTuber and motivational speaker Dr. Vivek Bindra through his company, Bada Business Pvt Ltd. The Bench of Justice MM Sundresh and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma heard the plea moved by multiple petitioners from across India, who claimed they had been duped of their hard-earned money in what they described as a “money chain-like scheme.”

8. [Fake Caste Certificate] The Supreme Court on August 25, 2025, regularised the MBBS admission of a student who had secured her seat under the Scheduled Tribe category but was later found not entitled to the benefit. By the time her caste certificate was declared invalid, she had already completed her medical degree, internship, and secured admission in a postgraduate course under the general category. The bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and K V Vishwanathan balanced equity with law, permitting the student to continue her academic journey but directing her father, Sanjiv Vithalrao Palekar, to pay Rs five lakh as compensation since “one eligible meritorious candidate from the Scheduled Tribe category lost the opportunity to pursue the MBBS course".

9. [Termination of Cop] The Supreme Court on August 29, 2025, upheld the dismissal of Punjab police commando Satpal Singh for the “gravest act of misconduct” of remaining absent from duty without authorization. Court clarified that a disciplinary authority’s reference to past misconducts does not invalidate a dismissal order when the penalty is based on the primary charge proved in the inquiry. "Mere mentioning of past misconducts cannot be attributed to have formed the basis of adverse action against the delinquent employee," the bench said.

10. [Bihar SIR] The Supreme Court on Monday reiterated that Aadhaar cannot serve as a standalone proof of citizenship, cautioning political parties against attempts to elevate its legal status beyond what is stipulated under law. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi, hearing petitions relating to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, observed that while Aadhaar can be used as an identity document, it does not establish citizenship.

11. [POSH Act] A Special Leave Petition (SLP) has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging a 2022 judgment of the Kerala High Court which, while partly affirming the importance of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (POSH Act), adopted what the petitioners describe as a “narrow and restrictive” interpretation of the law’s scope.

12. [Presidential Reference] The West Bengal government told the Supreme Court on September 2, 2025 that repeated withholding of assent by a Governor on bills would render the Constitution unworkable. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the state, submitted before the Constitution Bench that if a Governor continues to withhold assent even after a bill is repassed by the assembly, the constitutional framework itself would collapse.

[Release of Prisoners] A 62-year-old Non-Resident Indian (NRI) from Kerala, settled in Italy for over two decades, has approached the Supreme Court, underscoring how delays in bail surety verification can extend wrongful incarceration and amount to violations of fundamental rights under Articles 14, 19, 20, 21, and 22 of the Constitution.

14. [Child Swapping] The Supreme Court has agreed to examine a plea by a couple alleging a case of "child-swapping" at a private hospital after a DNA test revealed that one of the twin girls delivered by the petitioner did not genetically match her biological parents. The Bench of Justice Manoj Misra and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, while condoning the delay in filing, issued notice to the respondents returnable in four weeks, observing that the matter required consideration.

15. [Terrorist Shabbir Shah] The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice on a plea filed by Terrorist Shabir Ahmed Shah challenging a Delhi High Court order that had dismissed his bail application in a terror funding case registered by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The Bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta was hearing the matter. The High Court, in its June 12 order, had noted that “prima facie evidence indicates a role of terror funding conspiracy.”

16. [Custodial Deaths] The Supreme Court on Thursday initiated a suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) on the lack of functional CCTV cameras in police stations across the country, following media reports of 11 custodial deaths in 2025. The Bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta took note of a report published in Dainik Bhaskar highlighting the alarming rise in custodial deaths over the past seven to eight months.

17. [Online Gaming Act] The Supreme Court has agreed to hear on Monday, September 8, the Central government's petition to transfers cases pending before the High Courts challenging the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025. Centre's plea was mentioned before a CJI BR Gavai led bench which agreed to hear the same. Petitions have been filed before the High Courts of Madhya Pradesh, Delhi and Karnataka.

18. [Floods in Northern India] Supreme Court of India has issued notice on a PIL seeking the formation of a SIT involving experts to find out the reasons for the floods in the northern states of India. Taking note of the over unprecedented rains and floods, a CJI Gavai led bench said, "Prima facie we have seen that there is illegal felling of trees..". Notices have been issued to the Union of India, National Disaster Management Authority, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Ministry of Jal Shakti, National Highways Authority of India, the states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

19. [Surendra Gadling] Supreme Court has granted two weeks time to the National Investigation Agency to respond to the bail plea filed by Surendra Gadling, accused in the Bhima Koregoan Elghar Parishad Violence case of 2018. Earlier, a bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and N Kotiswar Singh was scheduled to hear the plea, but Justice Sundresh recused himself. Recently, senior advocate Anand Grover had mentioned the matter before CJI Gavai for an early hearing, citing Gadling's six yearlong incarceration.

20. [West Bengal VC Appointment] The Supreme Court has advanced the hearing in the ongoing dispute over the appointment of Vice Chancellors in West Bengal universities to September 22, after Senior Advocate Jaideep Gupta requested an earlier date. Gupta informed the Court that the case was currently listed for September 26 but noted that former Chief Justice U.U. Lalit’s report, submitted in connection with the matter, was already with the Registry. He urged that the hearing be brought forward so that directions could be issued.

21. [Crime Proportionate Fines] The Supreme Court today refused to entertain a petition seeking guidelines to courts to consider imposing fines in proportion to the seriousness or gravity of crime. A CJI BR Gavai led bench told the petitioner before it, "How can we direct the judges to impose fines as per crimes..". Court went on to dismiss the plea noting that it was the domain of the parliament to decide such issues. The PIL was filed on the footing that fine under criminal sections as grossly inadequate in achieving its goals in present scenario due to extremely low valuation of rupees during last many decades.

22. [Ethanol Blended Petrol] A Chief Justice of India BR Gavai led bench of the Supreme Court refused to entertain a PIL filed against the 'forced and unregulated' implementation of Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) across the country. Attorney General R Venkataramani told the court that the petitioner was just a name lender and there was a lobby behind the plea. "There is no mindless application..everything has been considered by the government..this benefits sugarcane manufacturers..", AG told the court.

23. [Passenger Jetty near Gateway of India] The Supreme Court of India refused to block the passenger jetty project proposed near Gateway of India in Mumbai, Maharashtra. A CJI Gavai led bench did not deem it fit to intervene with the Bombay High Court's July 15 decision dismissing three petitions challenging the project conceptualized by the Maharashtra Maritime Board. The high court dismissed three petitions challenging the construction of the ₹229 crore passenger jetty and terminal facility proposed by the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) near the Gateway of India.

24. [Sambhal Mosque] The Supreme Court extended by two weeks its earlier order directing status quo in the dispute over the Shahi Jama Masjid and Harihar Temple in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. The Bench of Bench of Justice PS Naramsimha and Justice Alok Aradhe noted that two separate appeals had been filed by the Committee of Management Jami Masjid Sambhal through its secretary and vice president. The Court directed its registry to conduct an enquiry into the matter and submit a report.

[RTE Act] The Supreme Court today referred the issue of minority schools being exempted from the ambit of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (RTE Act) before the Chief Justice of India. "We respectfully express our doubt as to whether Pramati Educational and Cultural Trust (supra) [insofar as it exempts the application of the RTE Act to minority schools, whether aided or unaided, falling under clause (1) of Article 30 of the Constitution] has been correctly decided", the bench observed. 26. [Cartoon of PM Modi, RSS] The Supreme Court on Tuesday disposed of the plea filed by cartoonist Hemant Malviya, accused of publishing a caricature portraying Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in an undignified manner. The Bench of Justice Aravind Kumar and Justice NV Anjaria recorded that Malviya had complied with its earlier order by posting an apology on his Facebook and Instagram accounts.

[Trans Right] The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice on a plea seeking to implement transgender-inclusive Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in alignment with international standards such as the UNESCO-WHO International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education (ITGSE) framework. 28. [Kerala VC appointment] The Kerala Governor has approached the Supreme Court seeking modification of its August 18 order on the process for appointing Vice Chancellors to two state universities. In his application, the Governor urged the Court to exclude the Chief Minister from the selection process, include a nominee of the University Grants Commission (UGC) in the search committee, and ensure that the Chancellor retains the discretion to choose from an alphabetical panel of shortlisted candidates.

29. [Suicide by a Rifle] The Supreme Court has raised serious questions over a prosecution claim that a man had taken his own life by shooting himself in the chest with a rifle, directing the State to clarify whether the investigating agency had properly examined the possibility of homicide. Taking note of the High Court’s decision to grant anticipatory bail to the accused under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (abetment of suicide), the Bench of Justice Manoj Misra and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan observed that the very manner of the alleged suicide required closer scrutiny.

[Kanhaiyalal Murder] The Supreme Court refused to cancel the bail granted to Mohammed Javed, an accused in the brutal killing of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal in 2022, dismissing appeals filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the victim’s son, Yash Teli. The Bench of Justice M M Sundresh and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma upheld the Rajasthan High Court’s order, which had earlier extended bail to Javed, and declined to interfere.

31. [Sharjeel Imam] UAPA accused Sharjeel Imam has now knocked on the doors of Supreme Court of India seeking bail in the Delhi riots larger conspiracy case. Imam has filed a Special Leave petition before the Supreme Court challenging the Delhi High Court's September 2nd order denying bail to him, Umar Khalid, and seven others. The High Court held “violence in the name of protest is not free speech” as it dismissed the bail pleas of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and seven others.
