Allahabad HC Asks Bar Bodies to Specify Proposals To Prevent Lawyers' Strikes

The Allahabad High Court has recently directed the Bar Council of India, the State Bar Council, the Bar Associations of the High Court Allahabad, and the District Bar Association Prayagraj to submit affidavits detailing their plans to enforce the Supreme Court's directions prohibiting lawyers' strikes in their respective courts.
The bench of Justices Ashwani Kumar Mishra and Dr. Gautam Chowdhary was hearing a suo motu contempt application.
Senior Counsel R. K. Ojha appearing for the President and Secretary of the District Bar Association, Prayagraj stated that in principle the Bar Association is of the view that holding of strikes would be impermissible in view of the judgment pronounced by the Supreme Court in a catena of cases, but, it would be desirable that wider consultation be made with the Bar Council in order to evolve effective strategy to eliminate the menace of strike.
Advocate Sai Girdhar, appearing for Bar Council of India and Advocate Ashok Kumar Tiwari, representing Bar Council of UP sought short time to obtain complete instructions in the matter.
The Registrar General of the High Court also filed a report which clearly stated that almost all the districts of Uttar Pradesh work was seriously hampered on account of strikes call by the Advocates.
