Synopsis

Court noted that showing his large-heartedness, Senior Adv. Dr. Ashok Nigam stated that he would accept any compensation fixed by the high court as the fight was more about honour of lawyers

The Allahabad High Court recently directed the State Government of Uttar Pradesh to provide compensation of Rs. 1 to lawyers of the high court for a clash with the police in 2004.

The noteworthy direction came in a plea filed by Dr. Ashok Nigam, a senior lawyer and Chairman of the Elders Committee at the high court.

Through his petition, Dr. Ashok Nigam sought compensation for the loss/injuries suffered by the lawyers due to the scuffle with the police personnel present on the court premises.

At the outset, while pointing out that the matter was very old, the bench of Justices Vivek Chaudhary and Om Prakash Shukla asked the Senior Advocate about the compensation he expected.

Court took note of the response of the Senior Advocate Nigam. It noted that showing his large-heartedness, Dr. Ashok Nigam stated that he would accept any compensation fixed by the high court as the fight was more about honour of lawyers.

Therefore, considering the seniority stature and respect the Senior Advocate commands, as a token of respect, court ordered the State to pay Rs. 1 as compensation to the lawyers.
