The Allahabad High Court issues stay order on trial proceedings for SP MLA Zahid Beg in maid suicide case

Accused of harassing their maid who allegedly died by suicide, SP MLA Zahid Beg and his wife Seema Beg get relief from Allahabad High Court

The Allahabad High Court has stayed proceedings against Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Zahid Beg alias Zahid Jamal Beg and his wife Seema Beg, who are accused in a case linked to the alleged suicide of their maid servant in Bhadohi district.

The bench of Justice Sameer Jain passed the order on October 16, 2025, while hearing the MLA’s plea under Section 528 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The court had already stayed the proceedings against Seema Beg on September 16.

The case against Begs was registered in 2024 at Police Station Bhadohi under Section 108 BNS, which pertains to abetment of suicide. The FIR was lodged by a Sub-Inspector following the maid’s death at the MLA’s residence, leading to both the MLA and his wife being named as accused persons. Allegedly, the couple's maid, Nazia, died by suicide due to harassment and torture by the MLA and his family. The charge sheet in the case has been filed before the Special Judge (MP/MLA Court), Bhadohi.

Senior Advocate G.S. Chaturvedi, appearing for the MLA along with Advocate Zeeshan Mazhar, argued that the allegations were false and politically motivated. He told the court that the applicant was a sitting legislator and had been implicated “without proper investigation". The counsel contended that even a prima facie case of abetment was not made out under Section 108 BNS, yet the police hastily filed a charge sheet.

The counsel highlighted that the applicant’s wife, Seema Beg, had already filed a separate application under Section 528 BNSS. The High Court had earlier, in that matter, sought a counter-affidavit from the State after finding that the case merited examination.

The MLA requested that his own application be connected with his wife’s pending plea so that both could be heard together. He also urged the court to grant interim protection by staying the trial proceedings until the matter was adjudicated.

The AGA, representing the State, opposed the plea but did not dispute the factual background presented by the counsel for Beg. The High Court, taking note of this, observed that the issues raised required judicial consideration.

After hearing both sides, Justice Sameer Jain directed that the MLA’s application be connected with that of his wife’s pending matter. The bench also directed the registry to list both cases together.

Importantly, the High Court ordered that till the next date of listing, all further proceedings in the trial case pending before the Special Judge (MP/MLA), Bhadohi, shall remain stayed in respect of the MLA.
