Synopsis

Judge Sameer Bajpai will now hear the 2020 Delhi riots cases

In a significant development concerning the ongoing cases related to the Delhi riots of 2020, Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Amitabh Rawat of the Karkardooma Courts, who has been presiding over a cluster of these cases, has been transferred.

ASJ Rawat will now serve as the Special Judge (Prevention of Corruption Act) (CBI) at the Rouse Avenue Courts.

The reins of the Delhi riots cases will now be in the hands of Judge Sameer Bajpai, who was previously holding the position of Special Judge (PC Act) (CBI) at the Rouse Avenue Courts.

ASJ Rawat had been at the helm of the Delhi riots cases since the year 2020, including the pivotal larger conspiracy case involving accused individuals such as Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and several others.

Notably, the Delhi Police has applied provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in this high-profile case.

The transfer of ASJ Rawat comes amidst two separate orders issued by the High Court, resulting in a comprehensive reshuffling of the Delhi High Court Judicial Services.

A total of 87 judges from the Delhi High Court Judicial Services have been transferred, along with the reassignment of 120 judges from the Delhi Judicial Services.
