Synopsis

The allegation is that Gandhi, during campaigns for the Karnataka legislative assembly elections, commented that despite the BJP's claim of having clean politics, it had a party president who was "accused" in a murder case

In a defamation case filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vijay Mishra, a Special Court in Uttar Pradesh's Sultanpur granted bail to Gandhi on Tuesday.

The case was initiated over remarks made by Gandhi against Union Home Minister Amit Shah in a press conference in Bengaluru on May 8, 2018 during election campaigns for the Karnataka legislative assembly elections.

The alleged remarks centered around a reference to Union Home Minister Amit Shah as a "murder accused." The allegation is that Gandhi, during the campaigns, commented that despite the BJP's claim of having clean politics, it had a party president who was "accused" in a murder case. At that time, Amit Shah held the position of BJP president.

In his complaint, Mishra complained that these "objectionable comments" had tarnished the image of the Home Minister.

Reportedly, today, Rahul Gandhi voluntarily surrendered in court, where he was subsequently taken into custody for a duration of 30-45 minutes. Following this, his counsel submitted a bail application, which was subsequently accepted by the court.
