‘Rana Sanga Remark’: SP MP Ramji Lal Suman Moves Allahabad HC Seeking Protection

Read Time: 04 minutes

Synopsis

The Karni Sena and other Rajput groups have continued to demand an apology from Ramji Lal Suman and have threatened to march to Agra again on April 12

Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Lal Suman has moved the Allahabad High Court seeking protection for himself and his family. The request comes in the aftermath of a violent attack on his residence in Agra and mounting outrage from Rajput groups over his controversial remarks about the historic Rajput ruler Rana Sanga.

The plea, filed by Suman and his son Ranjeet Suman—a former MLA—urges the court to direct the central government to ensure adequate protection for the family and ensure strict legal action against those responsible for the March 26 attack.

It also seeks direction to the police for an impartial probe into the incident. The petition has been moved through Senior Advocate Imran Ullah and Advocate Vineet Vikram.

According to the petitioners, threats from Rajput organisations, including the Karni Sena, have continued unabated even after the attack. Ranjeet Suman has already lodged an FIR at Hariparvat police station against unidentified individuals in connection with the violence.

The controversy stems from a Rajya Sabha speech made by Ramji Lal Suman on March 21. While asserting that Indian Muslims regard Prophet Muhammad and the Sufi tradition—not Mughal emperor Babur—as their icons, he allegedly described Rana Sanga as a “traitor” for aligning with Babur against Ibrahim Lodi in the early 1500s. The comment sparked widespread fury among Rajput communities, who viewed it as an affront to their historical legacy and pride.

Right-wing groups and Rajput leaders condemned Suman’s remarks, demanding a public apology. The Karni Sena has threatened another protest march to Agra on April 12 if their demands are not met. Despite the mounting pressure, the SP MP has stood by his statement and has yet to issue an apology.
