In connection with the alleged leak of Jamia Millia Student Asif Iqbal Tanha’s confession statement, the Delhi Police has informed the Delhi High Court  that during the investigation the enquiry officer could not establish the office/ officer from where details of the investigation were allegedly shared with the media

The Police further informed that they had interrogated various journalists who refused to reveal their sources.

The single Judge bench of Justice Mukta Gupta was hearing a plea by of Jamia Millia Islamia student Asif Iqbal Tanha against the alleged leak of his “confession statement” by police to the media. 

The Court had earlier granted two weeks to the Delhi Police for completion of inquiry into the alleged leak of Tanha’s purported confessional statement and supplementary chargesheet.

Advocate  Rajat Nair appearing for the Delhi Police submitte an affidavit of the report in a sealed cover.

The Court said it would peruse the report and accordingly listed the matter for next hearing on August 11.

On March 1, 2021,  the court had pulled up the  Delhi Police calling the  vigilance inquiry report on the alleged leak of the “confession statement” half-baked and “a useless piece of paper”.

On March 5, 2021 while taking note of the alleged leak of the supplementary chargesheet, the court had directed the Commissioner of Police to file a reply.

The plea filed by Tanha, who was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, said he was aggrieved by the coverage by various news and electronic media houses, and that he has confessed to organizing and inciting communal riots that occurred in North-East Delhi. He has sought direction to media and social media platforms to take down the concerned information.
