Synopsis

The association highlighted the personal atrocities committed by certain police personnel upon the practicing advocates of the high court

The Allahabad High Court on February 14, 2025 addressed serious accusations against the police after a violent clash with lawyers in Prayagraj. The High Court Bar Association brought the case, and now the court is looking into it, ordering the authorities to respond to the allegations.

A division bench comprising Justices Rajiv Gupta and Mohd. Azhar Husain Idrisi heard arguments from senior advocate Anil Tiwari, representing the Bar Association, who submitted a supplementary affidavit along with a pen drive purportedly containing evidence of police excesses against practicing advocates. The court took these submissions on record and ordered the secure custody of the pen drive with the Registrar General.

The incident, which has sparked outrage among the legal fraternity, reportedly involved severe mistreatment of lawyers by law enforcement officials. Allegations of personal atrocities committed by certain police personnel were highlighted, prompting the court to grant the petitioners two days to submit personal affidavits from the affected advocates.

The state, represented by Additional Advocate General Manish Goyal, was also granted two days to respond to the supplementary affidavit. Additionally, personal affidavits from high-ranking officials—including the Divisional Commissioner, Mela Adhikari, Police Commissioner, District Magistrate, and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic)—were submitted in court. These documents have been officially taken on record.

Court then scheduled the matter for a fresh hearing on a later date when further arguments and evidence were expected to take place. However, the matter has been now posted on March 27, 2025.
