Bengaluru NIA Court sentences 3 Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh members to 7-year imprisonment

Synopsis

Large quantities of electrical and electronic items, tools, chemical apparatus, containers, and other items used in the fabrication of bombs and IEDs, digital cameras, and incriminating handwritten documents were seized from the JMB hideout in Bengaluru.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) Special Court, Bengaluru on Monday i.e. November 28, 2022, sentenced three Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) members in two terror-related cases.

The case pertains to the seizure of large quantities of electrical and electronic items, tools, chemical apparatus, containers, and other items used in the fabrication of bombs and IEDs, digital cameras, and incriminating handwritten documents from the JMB hideout in Bengaluru.

The three accused convicted are:

  1. Najir Sheikh @ Patla Anas convicted and sentenced to 7 Years RI and fine under sections 120B, 395, 452, 397, 399, 400, 458 & 201 of IPC, sections 17, 18, 20, 21 & 23 of UA (P) Act, 1967 and section 25 (1) of Arms Act.
  2. Habibur Rahaman Sk @ Habibur Sk @ Talha Sk convicted and sentenced to 7 Years RI and fine under sections 120B, 395, 397, 399, 452, 468, 471, 400 & 458 of IPC, sections 17, 18, 20 & 23 of UA (P) Act, 1967 and section 25 (1) of Arms Act.
  3. Mosaraf Hossain @ Hossain convicted and sentenced to 7 Years RI and fine under sections 120B, 395, 452, 397, 400 & 458 of IPC, sections 17, 18 & 20 of UA (P) Act, 1967, and section 25 (1) of Arms Act.

The Investigations by the agency established that the accused persons had raised funds by committing dacoities at various places in Bengaluru with the intention of furthering the activities of JMB in India and also collected explosive materials and test-fired a rocket launcher.

“The ‘proceeds of crime-dacoity’ in the form of Gold was sold by Nazir Sheikh and other accused for raising funds for carrying out terror activities”, the agency's press release read.

The investigation agency stated that four cases were registered related to dacoities committed by the accused persons, and after the completion of the investigation, a consolidated chargesheet was filed in all these dacoity cases.

As per the NIA press release, the case was initially registered by Karnataka Police at Soladevanahalli Police Station, Bengaluru on July 7, 2019, and was re-registered by NIA on July 29, 2019.
