BharatPe Defamation case: Delhi High Court asks former MD Ashneer Grover to maintain decorum

Synopsis

The Court has allowed more time to Grover and his kins to file their responses in the suit.

The Delhi High Court on Monday asked the counsel appearing for BharatPe's former Managing Director Ashneer Grover to tell Grover to maintain decorum, in a defamation case filed by BahartPe against him.

A bench of Justice Navin Chawla issued notice in the plea filed by BharatPe against Grover, his wife and brother for allegedly defaming the company BharatPe on social media and other platforms. The suit has sought damages of Rs. 88 Crores.

The bench after going through the tweets said, "The Social Media has brought us to this level? Ask him to maintain decorum."

However, the Court has allowed more time to Grover to file his response in the suit.

The damages demanded cover a claim for payments totaling Rs 71.7 crore made against invoices from fictitious vendors, a claim for a Rs 1.66 crore fine paid to the GST authorities, payments totaling Rs 7.6 crore made to vendors ostensibly offering recruitment services, payments of Rs 1.85 crore made to a furnishings company, payments for personal expenses up to Rs 59.7 lakh, and payments of Rs 5 crore damages for the company's loss of reputation brought on by tweets.

It is alleged that Grovers used business money to buy appliances for their house as well as to pay their upscale duplex's rent and security deposit. According to the lawsuit, Grovers initially used the duplex as the company's guest house but later began residing there.
