The Public Interest Litigation was filed by an environment activist claiming that the cycle track was constructed illegally and in an unauthorised manner between the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Vihar lake, which can have several environmental and ecological consequences.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Madhav Jamdar of the Bombay High Court, on Monday, directed a joint inspection of the cycle track which stretches over 5.5 km between the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Vihar Lake, which is allegedly constructed in the eco-sensitive zone.
The bench directed the petitioner, the deputy director of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, and a representative of BMC to visit the site and provide the status of the track. The court also directed to submit the pictures of the disputed track on Thursday. The joint inspection was directed after Senior Advocate, Darius Khambatta, informed the court that the construction is complete.
The Public Interest Litigation was filed by an environmentalist, Amrita Bhattacharjee, challenging the illegal and unauthorised construction of a cycle track. The PIL stated that the project is in violation of Wetlands Rules, 2017 and that the construction may cause serious ecological imbalance and flooding in the city which will affect the people of the city.
