Calcutta HC to Hear Convict’s Plea for Acquittal in RG Kar Doctor Rape-Murder Case on July 16

The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday scheduled a hearing for July 16 on an appeal filed by Sanjay Roy, who is serving a sentence of imprisonment until the end of his natural life for the rape and murder of a doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Roy, through his counsel, has sought acquittal, asserting that he has been wrongfully convicted.
The appeal was placed before a division bench comprising Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Prasenjit Biswas, which directed that copies of the appeal be served on all concerned parties before the next date of hearing.
Roy had been convicted for the brutal assault, rape, and killing of the young medical professional, an incident that drew widespread outrage.
The appeals filed by the West Bengal government and the CBI challenging the life sentence awarded to Sanjoy Roy in the RG Kar rape-murder case were taken up by the Calcutta High Court on January 27, 2025.
Earlier, the handling of the brutal rape and murder of the woman at RG Kar Medical College by the Kolkata state machinery was strongly criticised by the Supreme Court observing that the approach taken in the case violated not only constitutional principles but also the dignity of the individual.
Public outrage and gravity of the matter called for suo-motu cognizance by the Top Court on August 20, 2024.
