CBI arrests ITAT judge and lawyer in Jaipur bribery case

CBI says seized cash, hawala-linked payments and documents suggest a larger bribery nexus influencing tribunal orders

A lawyer and a serving Judicial Member of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), Jaipur Bench, have been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in what officials say appears to be a bribery racket operating within the tribunal system.

According to the agency, the arrests were made after credible source information indicated that a network of tribunal officials and private individuals had been indulging in corrupt activities for settling appeals pending in the ITAT bench, Jaipur in lieu of bribe.

The CBI said it registered a case on 25 November 2025 against the accused advocate and others, including the judicial member and an assistant registrar of the tribunal. The agency has also invoked charges against unknown public servants and private individuals allegedly linked to the network.

During the operation, the CBI arrested the advocate on 25 November while allegedly receiving a bribe of Rs 5.5 lakh, which officials say was routed through a hawala operator. The following day, the judicial member was taken into custody after investigators recovered Rs 30 lakh in cash from her official vehicle. The appellant in the case was also arrested on the same day.

The agency stated that the ongoing searches have revealed more evidence pointing to systemic wrongdoing.

“Multiple CBI teams raided locations in Jaipur, Kota and other places and seized cash amounting to more than Rs 1 crore, transaction details, property documents and other incriminating material indicating an organized syndicate,” the press statement noted.

Officials confirmed that search operations and follow-up actions are still underway.
