Chandigarh Mayoral Polls: Punjab & Haryana High Court orders submission of entire record of polls to be submitted in sealed cover

The Punjab & Haryana High Court has issued notice to Administration of Union Territory of Chandigarh over mayoral polls issue. The Court has ordered that the entire record of polls including ballot slips and videography be submitted in sealed cover to the court.

The Court was hearing a plea filed by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP’s) Mayoral candidate, Anju Katyal, and two other councilors, Prem Lata and Ram Chander Yadav, had moved to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, challenging the poll results for post of Mayor.

According to sources, Katyal approached the Court seeking directions to declare elections results for Chandigarh Mayor’s post illegal, and also requested the court to direct the State Election Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, and other official respondents to hold fresh elections for the Mayor’s post. 

On the last date of hearing, Senior Standing Counsel U.T., Chandigarh, Anil Mehta informed the Court that the petitioners have challenged the election to the posts of Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor to Muncipal Corporation, Chandigarh, however they have not been impleaded as party to this writ petition. Also, delcaration of result has not been challenged while only a newspaper cutting has been placed on record although the final result has been uploaded on the notice board.

Today, the bench of Justice Ritu Bahri and Justice Anil Kumar Verma issued notice to Administration of Union Territory of Chandigarh and ordered entire record of polls including ballot slips and videography to be submitted in sealed cover.
