Committe has decided to not allow parking at Maidan: ASG- Calcutta HC summons minutes of meeting

In its suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) lodged as to the state of the Maidan and its adjoining areas, the Calcutta High Court has directed the State to submit a minutes of the meeting attended by Officials of Army, Police, Municipal Corporation and PWD along with learned Advocate General and learned Additional Solicitor General.

In the last hearing, Advocate General S.N. Mukherjee had submitted to the Court that the committee had decided to restrict parking in the Maidan as of now.

In 2020, the then Bench of Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Arijit Banerjee in its own motion started a sup moto PIL as to the state of the Maidan and its adjoining areas, particularly the filth that is the Brigade Parade Ground, the illegal parking of cars on Casurina Avenue, Hospital Road, Queen’s Way, Khidderpore Road and Cathedral Road despite orders of Supreme Court prohibiting the same.

The Dalhousie Club sought permission from the Calcutta High Court to park cars on the ground. On its basis, the Calcutta High Court formed a high-level committee comprising the Calcutta Municipality, the Calcutta Police, the PWD Advocate General and the Army. The committee was tasked with reviewing whether car parking could be done there.
