The petitioner highlighted that Tamil announcements are already made in countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka
The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the Union Civil Aviation Ministry to consider a representation seeking announcements in Tamil in all domestic flights operating to and from Tamil Nadu.
The order was passed by a division bench of Acting Chief Justice D. Krishnakumar and Justice K. Kumaresh Babu in a Public Interest Litigation plea filed by World Tamil Research Trust, represented by its president C. Kanagaraj.
The petitioner sought a direction to make such announcements mandatory for the domestic flights bound to or leaving Tamil Nadu.
The petitioner contended that Tamil announcements are being made even in foreign countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka, therefore, why they should not be mandatory on domestic flights within Tamil Nadu.
The division bench said that courts could not issue a positive direction rather the Centre, could be only directed to consider a representation made by the litigant.
Accordingly, while disposing of the petition pension since 2021, the high court directed the Centre to consider the petitioner's representation within 12 weeks.
