Court issues notice to manufacturer of Covishield, Serum Institute of India (SII), and Bill Gates, who funded SII for the death of a medical student from the side effects of the vaccine.
A bench of Justice S.V Gangapurwala and Justice Madhav J. Jamdar issued a notice in a plea filed by Dilip Lunawat which sought Rupees 1000 Crore from Serum Institute of India Pvt. Ltd. (SII), through its CEO Adar Poonawala, manufacturer of the COVID-19 vaccine, Covishield. The Court also issued notice to Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft who had funded SII to manufacture the vaccine. The petitioner claimed that his daughter, a medical student had died due to side effects of Covishield.
The petitioner has alleged that his daughter was forced to take the vaccine since she was a health worker and was assured that the vaccine is safe and has no risk to the human body. Further, the petitioner has submitted a report of the Central government's Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI), wherein the committee admitted that the cause of the death of her daughter was because of the side effects of the vaccine.
The petitioner had also made the State government, Union government, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, DCGI, AIIMS, and Maharashtra government parties to the petition alleging that false assurances were given by the respondents with regard to the safety of the vaccine without any verification. The petitioner has also prayed before the court to direct the central government to take necessary actions against social media companies for not disclosing the correct data of deaths due to side effects of COVID-19 vaccines.
The Bombay High Court has issued notice and the matter is returnable on 17.11.2022
