Synopsis

The Indian Railway Personnel Service officer, Anjali Birla, pursued legal action against various social media accounts that purportedly claimed her success in the UPSC exam was solely attributable to her father's position.

Anjali Birla, the daughter of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, filed a defamation lawsuit in the Delhi High Court to seek the removal of social media posts alleging that she had passed the UPSC civil services examination due to her father's influence. The case was listed before the bench of Justice Navin Chawla.

Anjali Birla argued that the posts were disseminating false and damaging information designed to harm her reputation. She asserted that these allegations lacked any factual basis and were intended to undermine her standing through deceptive narratives.

The lawsuit also sought to prevent the defendants from further tarnishing Speaker Om Birla's reputation. The named defendants included the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Google Inc., X Corp (formerly Twitter), and unnamed parties.

Additionally, Anjali Birla filed a complaint with the Inspector General of Police, Cyber Cell, Maharashtra, against several X account holders and others for offenses under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (2023) and the amended Information Technology Act (2008). An FIR was registered on July 5, 2024, against the defendants by Maharashtra's cyber cell.
