The case stems from an FIR filed in December 2015 by the Delhi police special cell, which received information that the terrorist organization al-Qaeda was attempting to establish a base in India under the banner of the AQIS and had declared Asim Umar as its 'Amir' (head).

A Delhi Court on Tuesday convicted four Al Qaeda operatives for terror activities and expanding the network of Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Sanjay Khanagwal of the Patiala House Court sentenced Mohd. Asif, Mohd. Abdul Rehman, Zaffar Masood, and Abdul Sami to seven years and five months imprisonment. All four Al-Qaeda operatives were convicted under Sections 18 and 18B of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

It is to be noted that the court on February 10, while convicting the four Al-Qaeda terrorists, had stated that the prosecution proved the allegations beyond a reasonable doubt. However, the court had acquitted two co-accused Syed Mohd. Zeeshan Ali and Dr. Sabeel Ahmad in the same case. The court had directed their release on a personal bond of Rs. 10,000 each.

The Delhi Police alleged that Abdul Rehman ran a madrasa in Uttar Pradesh, and was trying to “radicalize the youths who enrolled there for terror activities”. It was also alleged that Zaffar Masood was propagating the terror agenda of the outfit among the youths to attract them toward AQIS. Furthermore, the Delhi Police alleged that Abdul Rehman was suspected to have international links in the middle-east and Pakistan.

The case stems from a First Information Report (FIR) filed in December 2015 by the Delhi police special cell, which received information that the terrorist organization al-Qaeda was attempting to establish a base in India under the banner of the AQIS and had declared Asim Umar as its 'Amir' (head).
