Synopsis

A defamation suit was filed by the Resident Doctors' Association of AIIMS against Baba Ramdev and other Patanjali Ayurved promoters for falsely claiming that allopathy caused COVID-19 deaths and that allopathic doctors profited from patients by prescribing harmful medicines.

The Delhi High Court, on Monday, directed Swami Ramdev and other Patanjali Ayurved promoters to remove and further refrain from making derogatory statements against allopathy doctors. Baba Ramdev and others while promoting their medicine Coronil as a ‘cure’ for Covid-19, blamed the allopathy doctors for numerous deaths.

The bench of Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani, while directing Baba Ramdev and others to remove such statements from public platforms, held ‘I have directed the defendants to take down certain tweets in three days, if they fail to do it, the social media intermediaries will take down the content’.

The interim order aimed to prevent Ramdev, Acharya Balkrishna, and Patanjali Ayurveda from making defamatory statements against allopathy and promoting ‘Coronil’ as a COVID-19 cure.

The association accused Ramdev of public nuisance and misrepresentation, arguing that his misinformation campaign could divert people from standard allopathic treatments and violate citizens' right to health under Article 21 of the Constitution.
