Wikipedia's page on ANI claimed that the agency was ‘acting as a propaganda tool for the current central government’. It was further claimed that ANI disseminated material from a network of fake news websites, and misreported events.
The Delhi High Court, on Thursday, directed the authorized representatives of Wikipedia to appear before the court to release information regarding the individuals who edited ANI’s page on the former platform. The bench of Justice Navin Chawla listed the matter for October 25, 2024.
Advocate Sidhanth Kumar for ANI, in the previous court hearing, argued that the that the Wikimedia Foundation and its officials published false and defamatory content with the intent to damage the news agency's reputation and goodwill.
The court, in the previous order, acknowledged that Wikipedia was entitled to hold opinions but would need to justify its actions in court, recognizing the suit as a defamation case.
Previously, a Delhi court had summoned Wikipedia over the deletion of the Wikipedia profile of author and BJP Spokesperson Tuhin A. Sinha. The suit sought a mandatory injunction against the Wikimedia Foundation directing them to reinstate his Wikipedia profile.
