Delhi HC Directs State To File Status Report In Plea To Rescue Children Working As Bonded Labor

Synopsis

The court was notified regarding 18 complaints that were lodged asking authorities to raid multiple locations to rescue 245 children and 772 adolescents who were being compelled to work under hazardous and unsanitary conditions for 12-13 hours daily.

The Delhi High Court, on Thursday, directed the state government to file a status report in a plea seeking directions against the government to conduct raids and rescue 1000 1,000 children who were trafficked from various parts of the country and coerced into bonded labor.

The bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela noted a lack of trust between the petitioner and the government and therefore expressed confidence that the authorities would act appropriately. The bench directed the petitioner to provide information to the government ‘in a sealed cover during the day’, who would then coordinate with other departments to ensure action.

During the hearing, Standing Counsel Santosh Kumar Tripathi reported that a meeting had occurred between the petitioner and the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM), but ‘no actionable information’ was provided. Standing Counsel noted that the petitioner had not furnished ‘proper’ addresses for the properties where the child laborers were believed to be working, making it challenging for authorities to take action.

However, Advocate Robin Raju, representing the petitioner, argued that no requests for information had been made and urged the court to establish a timeline for the rescue operation.
